LOSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Oscar Piastri took pole position in qualifying for the sprint race in Qatar later Saturday, with Max Verstappen on the verge of clinching his third consecutive Formula One title.Australian rookie Piastri beat his McLaren teammate Lando Norris by .082 seconds for first place, with Verstappen in third, .192 off the pace.Norris seemed to have the pace to beat Piastri on his last lap of the session but went wide on the last corner.Verstappen needs to finish at least sixth in the 19-lap sprint to ensure he wins the title. Otherwise, he will also be champion if his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez finishes outside the top three. Perez is set to start eighth for the sprint, continuing a run of underwhelming results in qualifying for the Mexican driver. The start of the “shootout” session — a shortened qualifying format — was delayed by 20 minutes and an extra 10-minute practice was added following concerns that the pointed “pyramid” kerbs used at the Losail circuit ...

LUTON, England (AP) — Tottenham moved to the top of the Premier League after a 1-0 win against Luton on Saturday, despite going down to 10 men. Micky van de Ven’s 52nd-minute goal at Kenilworth Road extended Spurs’ unbeaten league start to eight games, while Yves Bissouma was sent off in first-half added time. The win saw Tottenham move two points clear of defending champion Manchester City, which plays Arsenal on Sunday. James Maddison was the architect of Van de Ven’s goal with a twisting run in the box before crossing for his teammate to score from close range. For Luton it was a sixth league loss of the season following its promotion to English soccer’s top flight. Richarlison could have put Tottenham ahead early on, but he twice failed to take advantage. First he shot off target from a promising position and then Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski denied the Brazilian forward with his feet.Pedro Porro also failed to take another opportunity and Kaminski pr...

‘Unprecedented’ rail traffic between North Korea and Russia suggests military transfers

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:11:40 GMT

Pyongyang could very well be helping Moscow to gear up in its war with Ukraine, according to satellite imagery of the Tumangang rail facility at the border with Russia recorded by the U.S. think tank Beyond Parallel and made public on Friday.Although “the extensive use of tarps” makes it impossible to confirm whether this is actually artillery being transferred, the “unprecedented number of freight railcars” and level of rail traffic, along with the recent discussions between the two countries, seem to suggest so, the organization said. The traffic has recently been “far greater” than what has been observed in the past five years, including pre-COVID-19 levels, when there would be 20 railcars at the facility at most, it added.Last month, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un pledged his full support to Russian President Vladimir Putin and his “sacred fight” at a summit where both men discussed possibilities for military cooperation.Five days ...

Iran’s support for Hamas fans suspicion it’s wrecking Israel-Saudi deal

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:11:40 GMT

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s top military adviser said Tehran supported the attacks by Hamas against Israel on Saturday and would continue to back the Islamist fighters “until the liberation of Palestine and Jerusalem.” The remarks by Yahya Rahim Safavi, a former commander of the country’s Revolutionary Guards, will only fan suspicion that Tehran played a direct role in supporting its traditional ally, Hamas, in the well-planned attacks that have killed at least 40 people and injured more than 700. Interventions by Rahim Safavi and other senior Iranian policymakers will also be seen by Iran’s long-running regional rival Saudi Arabia as a threatening signal that Tehran is willing to stir up regional conflict to prevent Riyadh from normalizing ties with Israel, as the U.S. wants. “We support the commendable ‘Al-Aqsa Storm’ operations,” Rahim Safavi was quoted as saying by state media in Iran, using Hamas’ ...
