Alex Cobb exits early as SF Giants drop series to down-and-out Padres

SAN DIEGO — It was bizarroball on Sunday for the Giants, and not in a good way.Alex Cobb, who went 28 batters without surrendering a hit in his last start, allowed the first batter he faced to reach base and three runs to score before he recorded three outs. Patrick Bailey, who has mowed down base runners like nobody else, went 0-for-3 on stolen base attempts. And the typically surehanded Brandon Crawford whiffed on a hard-hit ground ball that led to a run.It added up to a 4-0 loss, their third in a four-game series loss against the down-and-out Padres, one they really couldn’t afford with their tenuous grip on the postseason. Their win in the first game put them in sole position of the third and final wild card, but after three straight losses, they moved into a four-way tie. After throwing a career-high 131 pitches in a complete game in his last start, coming one out shy of a no-hitter, Cobb was out of the game after three innings and 58 pitches Sunday. He gave up four runs o...Pac-12 rewind: The best of a big weekend, from Colorado’s stunner to Washington’s blowout and everything in between

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Two-way starter Travis Hunter is already living up to all of his self-proclaimed hype, just like the primetime coach that he followed to Colorado.“Travis is him, like the young folks say,” said coach Deion Sanders, a two-way player himself in college and the NFL. “Travis is it.”And he was all over the field for the Buffaloes, making impacts on both sides of the ball while playing 129 snaps in their season-opening 45-42 shocker at 17th-ranked TCU. “I went out there and dominated,” Hunter said. “A lot of people doubting me because I rated myself as the No. 1 Heisman watch list. But people are praising me now, because they know what I can do. They’ve finally seen what I see in my vision and what the coaches’ vision is for me.”In a social media post even before the season, Hunter included “HEISMAN LOADING ….” with a photo of the sophomore in his Colorado uniform. While only the first game of a long season — especially if playing both sides throughout ...Death investigated at Burning Man while 70,000 festival attendees remain stuck in Nevada desert after rain

(CNN) — Authorities are investigating a death at the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert as thousands of people remain trapped on site after heavy rains inundated the area and created thick, ankle-deep mud which sticks to campers’ shoes and vehicle tires.Attendees were told to shelter in place in the Black Rock Desert and conserve food, water and fuel after a rainstorm swamped the area, forcing officials to halt any entering or leaving of the festival.“A little over 70,000 people,” remained stranded Saturday, Sgt. Nathan Carmichael, with the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office, told CNN Sunday morning. Some people have left the site by walking out but “most of the RVs are stuck in place,” he said.On Sunday morning, event organizers said roads remained closed as they were “too wet and muddy” and more uncertain weather was likely on the way. While some vehicles were able to leave, others got stuck in the mud, organizers said on the event’s website.“Please d...Worcester Art Museum to return statue after investigation determines it was likely stolen

Innings like that can sink a team. The Orioles led 4-2 to begin the fifth Sunday, but a questionable call by the umpiring crew sparked a game-tying rally by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Baltimore made sure the ruling didn’t matter, though, scoring four runs in the sixth en route to an 8-5 victory for a series win.Cedric Mullins, Adley Rutschman and Jordan Westburg each delivered RBI hits in the sixth, and the Orioles’ bullpen followed starter Jack Flaherty with 4 1/3 solid innings. In the fifth, Flaherty induced a potential ground ball double play, but the play ended with zero outs still on the scoreboard. Shortstop Gunnar Henderson fielded the ball on the second base side of the bag, ran to tag base runner Geraldo Perdomo and threw the ball to first, but Perdomo avoided the tag and Corbin Carroll was safe at first.Perdomo appeared to run out of the base path on the play, but second base umpire Tom Hanahan ruled he didn’t. The play was reviewed to see if Henderson made ...3 takeaways from the Chicago White Sox-Detroit Tigers series, including Tim Anderson’s milestone and Michael Kopech’s frustration

Too many walks led to a short afternoon for Chicago White Sox starter Michael Kopech. The bullpen picked him up Sunday, but the Sox couldn’t keep Spencer Torkelson in check all day. The Detroit Tigers designated hitter gave his team the lead with a solo home run in the seventh against reliever Aaron Bummer, and they held on to beat the Sox 3-2 in front of 22,246 at Guaranteed Rate Field.“Torkelson’s becoming that type of guy where, if you leave one out over the plate, he can hurt you,” Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “And he did and that ended up being the game-winner.”The Sox were swept in the three-game series and are a season-worst 31 games under .500 (53-84).Here are three takeaways from the series.1. Tim Anderson reached a hitting milestone.Anderson ripped a double to left-center on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first Sunday. The hit jump-started a two-run inning. HOUSTON — Aaron Boone believes an outside review of the Yankees organization, including the team’s use of analytics, would be a “great thing.”The manager said so on Sunday before the Yankees’ series finale against the Astros. Hal Steinbrenner recently told The Associated Press’ Mark Didtler that such an autopsy could be coming in the offseason.“We’re going to take a very deep dive into everything we’re doing,” Steinbrenner said earlier this week. “We’re looking to bring in possibly an outside company to really take a look at the analytics side of what we do. Baseball operations in general. We’re going to have some very frank conversions with each other. This year was obviously unacceptable.”Despite a sky-high payroll, Steinbrenner’s comments came with the Yankees in last place and below .500, the results of poor roster construction, underachieving veterans and injuries.
