NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — A sentencing hearing for the mother of a 6-year-old who shot his teacher in Virginia has been delayed until December. Deja Taylor faces up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to felony child neglect, though prosecutors will recommend only a six-month sentence as part of a plea deal. A sentencing hearing for Taylor had been scheduled for Friday in Newport News Circuit Court, but on Thursday a judge delayed the hearing to December 15. Court records indicate the delay comes at the request of both the defense and prosecutors, in part because a report from the guardian ad litem was not yet available. In Virginia, a guardian ad litem is appointed to represent the interests of the child in cases alleging neglect. Elementary school teacher Abby Zwerner was shot in her classroom in January by Taylor’s 6-year-old son, reviving a national dialogue about gun violence and roiling the military shipbuilding city of Newport News. The bullet fired from Taylor’s...Indiana, Ohio State, Maryland and Co. are eager to mix it up with Iowa in the Big Ten women’s race

Indiana coach Teri Moren started chasing Big Ten championships a decade ago.Back then, conference newcomer Maryland set the standard by winning three straight regular-season titles, three straight Big Ten tourney crowns and stringing together winning streaks of 22, nine, 23 and four against league foes. By Season 4, the rest of the league finally caught up to the Terrapins. Now the new hunt begins as Moren and other conference coaches try to prevent sharp-shooting Caitlin Clark and third-ranked Iowa from running away from the pack. The defending league champion Hoosiers aren’t ceding anything to a team they nearly swept last season.“I still really, really like our pieces,” Moren said. “I’ll bet on these guys, knowing what I’ve — by seeing what I’ve been able to see with them inside practice. I do think we have a chance (at a national championship).”Why wouldn’t they believe they can still win titles?Guard Grace Berger is the only one of Indiana’s top six scorers not ...Stock market today: Wall Street holds a bit steadier after weeks of losses

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is holding a bit steadier Friday following an encouraging profit report from Amazon, one of its most influential companies, and some mixed readings on the U.S. economy. The S&P 500 was 0.2% higher in morning trading, coming off its ninth loss in 11 days and its lowest level in five months. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 53 points, or 0.2%, as of 10:10 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.9% higher.Stocks have struggled recently for a couple reasons: Several Big Tech stocks tanked following profit reports for the summer, and rising Treasury yields in the bond market tightened their vise on Wall Street. The market got some relief after Amazon rose 7.8% following its profit report. Both its profit and revenue for the summer were better than expected. As one of the most massive companies on Wall Street, Amazon’s stock movements carry huge weight on the S&P 500 and other indexes. It’s one of the “Magnificent Seven” Big Tech stocks ...Daughter Ivanka Trump must testify at Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial, New York judge rules

NEW YORK (AP) — Ivanka Trump will have to take the witness stand in the civil fraud case against her father, her brothers and the family business, a judge ruled Friday. The ruling came weeks into the trial of New York Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit against former President Donald Trump, sons Don Jr. and Eric, the Trump Organization and some executives. After Ivanka Trump was dismissed from the case months ago, lawyers for her and the defense contended that she shouldn’t have to take the stand, noting that she moved out of New York and stepped away from her Trump Organization job in 2017. The state’s lawyers argued that the former Trump Organization executive vice president has relevant information.Judge Arthur Engoron sided with the state, citing documents showing that Ivanka Trump has ownership or management ties to some businesses in New York and still owns Manhattan apartments.“Ms. Trump has clearly availed herself of the privilege of doing business in New York...EU offers more cash to fertilizer makers over fears of new energy crunch

The European Commission is asking energy-intensive industries if they’d like to continue benefiting from relaxed state aid rules in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war and the impact it could have on global gas prices. This includes fertilizer producers, which last year made record profits.Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the EU executive loosened rules on how much state aid countries can give to energy-intensive sectors to compensate them for a spike in gas prices. The measures are due to expire on December 31.Between July and September, the Commission consulted with national governments on whether to extend the measures into 2024. The EU executive is still reviewing the feedback and has yet to make a decision, but fewer countries are expected to be in favor of the extension compared to last year.Nevertheless, in light of gas supply disruptions following the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Commission has already reached out directly to the industry that benefits fro...Hundreds of tips pour in about massacre in Maine, but accused gunman is still at large

(CNN) — Investigators searching for mass shooting suspect Robert Card have received more than 530 tips from the public, Maine’s public safety commissioner said Friday. But the “armed and dangerous” suspect accused of killing 18 people Wednesday remains at large, and crews are scrambling to find him by land, sea and air. While the manhunt intensifies, communities engulfed with grief are now riddled with anxiety. Two days after a gunman shot up a bowling alley and a bar, ravaging the tranquil city of Lewiston, residents across a 700-square-mile area were urged to keep sheltering in place Friday as authorities raced to find the suspect.Divers will search the area near a boat launch where Card’s vehicle was found, Maine’s Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck said Friday. “We will be putting divers in the water along the Androscoggin River,” he said.Air assets will also be deployed to help the divers look for evidence, the commissioner said.Live Updates:&n...Home Showcase: Views just part of allure of Cambridge penthouse
