New York City reached a historic settlement this week on behalf of more than 1,300 people who were attacked by police while protesting the police killing of George Floyd in 2020.The plaintiffs claimed that the New York Police Department violated protesters’ civil and constitutional rights by making mass arrests, using excessive force, using pepper spray improperly, and using a tactic called kettling to trap and arrest protesters ahead of an imposed curfew. The proposed settlement will pay out $13 million to 1,380 protesters — about $10,000 per person — the largest total payout to protesters in a class action suit in the United States, according to the plaintiffs. The settlement did not impose any reforms on the NYPD. Join Our Newsletter Original reporting. Fearless journalism. Delivered to you. HOYLAKE, England (AP) — Wyndham Clark was on the 18th green, 60 feet away from the hole. Rory McIlroy was in the scoring room, watching on television. Clark rolled the long putt to within a foot of the hole and pumped his fist. All that remained was tapping in for par to win the U.S. Open. That was the extent of Sunday drama in the majors this year. The champions are not about to complain, least of all Clark at Los Angeles Country Club or Brian Harman at Royal Liverpool, both of them first-time major winners who played as though they had been there before. Not every Masters can have the remarkable back-and-forth between Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose, much less a comeback by Tiger Woods. Augusta National always seems to deliver, but the slogan of the Masters not starting until the back nine on Sunday would be a tough sell the last four years. All that can salvage 2023 for edge-of-the-seat theater is the Ryder Cup.Rahm becoming a Masters champion is a big deal, particularly winning on the...Jaylen Brown, Celtics agree to 5-year supermax deal worth up to $304 million, biggest in NBA history

PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) — Spanish soccer club Osasuna overturned expulsion from the Europa Conference League on Tuesday after reaching an agreement with UEFA which was signed off by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.UEFA removed Osasuna from the third-tier European competition three weeks ago because former club officials were implicated in fixing matches a decade ago.Osasuna argued then its current management was not involved in match manipulation which under UEFA club competition rules demands a one-year expulsion if the fixing happened since 2007 when its legal statutes were updated. The club from Pamplona filed an appeal at CAS trying to save its first European qualification for 17 years which it earned by placing seventh in the Spanish league last season. In a statement Tuesday, Osasuna said a so-called “consent award” was reached with UEFA and ratified by CAS.UEFA said in a statement Osasuna had produced new evidence “which it was not in a position to file at an earlier stage.”“UE...Latest news
